So, while I spent another morning trawling LinkedIn, messaging new connections and pitching to clients, I had a realisation.

You know how we have this brilliant network of freelance writers we work with? Maybe you didn’t, but now you do. Well, it got me thinking about what that actually means. We know that finding a freelancer who suits your needs can be time-consuming (which is exactly why we created this network), but when you do, you get the holy trinity—and here’s why.

Firstly, they’re independent. That means you don’t have to hold their proverbial hand. Now, look, there’s nothing wrong with investing in someone and training them up, it’s actually great, but only if that’s someone who’s going to stick around. Not someone you work with once in a while.

Secondly, they probably have more skill sets than they advertise. Why? Because, as a freelancer, you need as many tools in your kit as possible to land the job. You’re not just a writer, you might also be an editor, a researcher, or a content strategist. You learn to adapt quickly, switch industries on the fly, and get up to speed with different tones, platforms, and briefs. That means when you hire a good freelancer, you're not just getting the one thing you asked for; you’re often getting a whole lot more.

And last—but definitely not least. In fact, this is the most important point:
They are hustlers.

Now, why does that matter to you? Because they have drive. Because not getting a reply to an email won’t stop them. Being a freelancer is being an entrepreneur. You have to constantly be looking for the next lead while also doing the work. People idolise the freelance lifestyle, but it’s not always easy—some months there’s too much work, some months there’s none. And no matter how you feel, you can’t stop.

Now, I don’t know about you, but that kind of work ethic? I love it.
